Explainer: How Infrared Works

The electromagnetic spectrum includes gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet, visible, infrared, microwaves, and radio waves. Infrared lies conveniently between visible and microwave wave lengths. When an object is not quite hot enough to radiate visible light, it will emit most of its energy in the infrared. The warmer the object, the more infrared it emits.

Any object that has a temperature above 0 degrees will emit infrared (yes, even ice cubes!).

We all experience varying forms of infrared everyday. The heat we feel from sunlight is in fact infrared. So is the heat we might feel from a bonfire or fireplace. Although our eyes cannot see infrared the nerves within our bodies and within our skin feel it as heat.

Unlike ultraviolet light, which can damage the skin, infrared light enhances cell regeneration.

Infrared light has the ability to penetrate even the deepest layers of one's skin, providing superior pain relief. Another pro is that infrared light is safe, natural, non-invasive, and painless and can provide a broad range of health benefits.

Infrared therapy can play many vital roles in the human body. These roles include but are not limited to: detoxification, pain relief, reduction of muscle tension, relaxation, improved circulation, weight loss, skin purification, improved diabetes, boosting of the immune system and lowering of blood pressure!

Infrared light also increases the production of nitric oxide, a vital molecule that is critical for the health of blood vessels and arteries. Nitric oxide helps relax the arteries/veins and helps prevent blood from clotting and clumping within one's blood vessels. It also helps combat free radicals in an effort to prevent oxidative stress and regulate blood pressure.

Nitric oxide is essential in improving blood circulation, which in turn provides more oxygen and nutrients to injured tissues. Infrared light speeds up wound repair and healing and also stimulates the regeneration of injured tissues, while simultaneously reducing inflammation and pain.
